For this assignment you are to take TWO pictures of the SAME subject as this student did. One picture you will want to set the shuttet to 1000 and see if the aperture can be adjusted to f 4 or below to cause the background to be simplified. If you can not get the meter centered with an aperture of 4 or less then either find a new subject OR use a Neutral Density filter to reduce the light. This assignment works better if you don't use the TRI-X we normally use in this class. You might use a roll of T-Max 100 for this assignment, it will be easier to get the lower aperture.
For the second photo set the shutter to 60 which is the lowest we can hand hold the camera at. Adjust the aperture again to get the meter centered. Now you want to get an aperture of f16 or more. The larger the aperture number or f stop number the better the focus in the background.
Other things that make the effect more dramatic: (a) get close to the subject, when you get closer than 5 feet the depth gets more dramatic (b) be sure that the objects in the background are FAR away from your subject for the greatest effect (c) a telephoto lens will make the effect more dramatic.
Your final project should have TWO prints labeled as the above are. (you don't need to write on the photo like this student did, you can do it in your notebook label)
