Teachers: You will note that the material for this class has been broken down into four sections. The class was designed for a block schedule of 90 minutes per day for 18 weeks. Each block represented a grade period or roughly every 4 and a half weeks. Students were assigned an entire block at one time with all of the content due in a notebook at the end of the time period. Students were then required to turn in or show the teacher progress on projects each week. For some years a time card was used that asked students to keep track of daily activities and accomplishments. That time was graded as a participation score. If your photo class is only 55 minutes in length then you will find the projects in the first two blocks will take up closer to 15 weeks to complete. Plan on each project in the block taking 180 minutes for the average student to complete. For a 90 minute block that means they should complete one project everry 2 days or for a 55 minute class it would be every 3 days. Projects were assigned in a block or notebook to help make darkroom and camera use spread out better. SCHS only had 10 enlargers and 15 cameras with a class size of 30 to 35 students so students had to learn to move to a different task if they could not access the equipment on a given day. Each notebook contains a number of non-darkroom assignments that accounted for roughly 20% of their time to allow for crowded darkrooms. Assignments that are in bold and italic were more difficult than the rest of the projects on a list and were expected only for students shooting for an "A". Some students had more problems than others and they were told to focus on the easier one first. ALL of the projects get more and more complex as they move to the right and down in the chart. In addition each student was expected to pick ONE photo from their negatives to display to the class for critique which occured every other week on Friday. Students made a 5x7 size print that fit into a pre-made mount board and was hung on a rack in the back of the room. The class then gathered around and discussed the prints and then each student was expected to take one photo of the batch and do a 100 word written critique of that photo to include in their notebook. |
