Rule of Composition Example Project

Take one of the rules of composition:

    Rule of Thirds

    Leading Lines

    Mergers

    Framing

Use TWO (2) pictures to illustrate ONE (1) of these rules. Most students pick the rule of thirds. If you pick Leading Lines or Mergers or Framing be sure to take a photo of the SAME subject where the lines or merger are eliminated in some way.

In one photo show the rule properly followed and on the other show the rule broken.  Of course, be sure to be careful with your exposure - make sure the meter is in the center - pay attention to your background and what is included in the whole frame.

A common mistake is to place the center of interest in the center of the frame. The focus screen in the center makes us think it is a target to put on the subject...it is NOT. Here the photographer is too far away from the subject which makes the photo include too many objects and thus becomes too busy. Notice how the sky light in the background almost Merges with the subject.

Notice that the photographer got CLOSE to the subject which helps simplify the background and allows only the SUBJECT to dominate the photo.
